Welcome to the Jungle

I've lived all over the United States, including, but not limited to Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, and Iowa. In these various locations I have come in contact with (or heard about) swarms of mosquitoes, fire ants, tarantulas, black widows, cockroaches (crawling up my leg while I was sleeping in my bed...), and lots and lots of other creepy crawly yucky bugs. Eew!!!

However, since moving into my sweet little abode 2 years ago, Anthony and I have been inundated with the pests. Snakes, mice, spiders, etc. Now, although I'm not a big fan of any of these, guests, I wasn't surprised. We live by a big open space, therefore, neither one of us should be too shocked to find ourselves with some unwelcome friends.

But, a praying mantis really did catch me by surprise the other day. I have never actually seen one of these, except in books and on A Bug's Life. All I really know about them is that they ladies eat their man after, well, I'm sure you all know.

Believe me when I say that my heart was pounding when I walked out of the front door, where I'm usually met by our snake neighbor, and found this big green bug, praying near my mums. I got low to the ground, but I took full advantage of the zoom feature on the camera!

Rumor has it that these bad boys are super nasty, and you don't want to mess with them, but they don't discriminate, so although they are mean to people, they are eat other bugs. If only they ate snakes and mice...

I like the picture of this bug better than the one with my granddaughter's sad face. She can really pull at the heart strings.

did you know they hiss too!!! we had one in our house a couple of days ago after bringing in my flowers so they didn't die in the frost. I thought shadow was hissing at it only to find that it was hissing at shadow! WHO KNEW!
