Some might say we have a little bit of a snake problem. I would say, it's a big problem!
Many of you are familiar with the fact that we host a snake sanctuary around our home. This was definitely not by our choosing, but, it is what it is. With the open spaces surrounding our house, I fear that snakes, mice, spiders, and all of God's "precious little creatures", are inevitable. I suppose as long as we don't see them, Anthony and I can play the ignorance card, and as they say, "ignorance is bliss". And so, this is how we have chosen to live our lives.
Last summer was quite a different story when every time I walked out the front door to water, there was a bull snake sunning himself on my front steps. Needless to say, the flowers died!
But, this was a new year, and with the new year, came new resolutions. We resolved to never see the snakes, and they must have resolved to hide. This was working just dandy for all parties involved.
Until Sunday...
Anthony and I were braving the front door when I heard rustling in the bush closest to our door.
me: "Do you hear that?"
Anthony: "Hear what?"
me: "It sounds like something's in the bush."
Anthony: "HISSSSSSSS!"
me: jumping in shear fear - "That's not funny! Something's down there." peering closer to the bush.
Anthony: "THERE IT IS! SNAAAAAKE!"
And there it was. A gray snake slithered from out of our bush to its hole, RIGHT UNDER OUR STEP!
So, now it's been determined. It better rain, because my flowers are going to have to fend for themselves, and, when you come over, you might just want to call first so we can let you in through the garage, because the bush that is currently overgrown, is just going to continue growing.

Oh, my goodness! Snakes are the one thing we haven't had to deal with at our house yet. I don't know if Missouri just isn't big on them or what, but thankfully (my husband who is terrified of snakes is especially thankful) so far, so good. From moles to spiders to the ants who are taking over our kitchen to snakes - all these lovely "God's creatures" really put a cramp in our summertime style, don't you think?
I completely agree! I had a dream a few weeks ago that Isabella was sitting in the grass and a snake bit her in the face. Hmmm...guess who's not sitting in the grass! I just want to enjoy our yard, play a little bocce ball, run around without shoes, and not fear what's lurking around the house. Anthony is also petrified of snakes, but he put on his brave pants earlier this summer and stunned a snake twice and then chopped (gulp) his head off! YUCK!!!
Oh, Lisa ,you are handling the situation quite well, and better than I would! Perhaps you should see about a mongoose as a pet, but the snake sanctuary would probably frown on that.
Ugh! I am soooooo glad that I have not seen the one who lived under our deck last summer since I chased him into the neighbors yard. I wanted so badly to chop him in half, but I just. can't. do. it. So far in the past week, I have killed a wasp nest and a fire ant nest on the patio. Or at least, I hope that I have.. .
